Get Unstuck

Overcoming leadership blind spots: How to break free from habitual thinking

Anne Machesky

It was 2:00 a.m. and I was staring down at a blank journal page. I wasn’t charting a business victory. I was wrestling with a heavy, suffocating feeling of being completely stuck as a business leader.

After 30 years in financial services advising corporate boards and navigating high-stakes strategy, I had hit a wall. Communication across my organization was stalled and trying to get anything done felt like swimming through peanut butter.

In the quiet, I realized something uncomfortable. I was tightly protecting a critical leadership blind spot. I was doing so by holding onto the belief that I was the only person responsible for solving everything.

That late-night realization wasn’t a defeat. It was a breakthrough. It was the precise moment I stopped forcing an immediate answer and saw the roadblock differently through a new strategic lens.

How to identify your default leadership language and limiting scripts

Throughout my career as a business leader, I have found that navigating these moments requires looking beyond the problem directly in front of us to the larger system shaping it. My own approach combines an analytical mindset with poetic language and an appreciation for the deeper dynamic beneath the surface. When we start noticing the lens we’re looking through, that’s when the nature of the problem changes. And so do the possibilities.

In my work with individuals, teams and leaders, I look for how these systems reveal themselves in what I call our default language. This language consists of the involuntary, limiting scripts we repeat when stress is high.

For example, your team’s collective script might be that they just can’t do it all, whereas your personal script might be that you’re never organized enough.

When you operate from that space, you internalize the challenge. You then become defensive, reactive and small, allowing the problem to dictate who you are. Instead of looking for an opportunity, you get caught up in your own limitations. To break that cycle, you have to reclaim your agency and actively shape where you want to go.

Why feeling stuck in business is actually a strategic signal

We need to fundamentally shift how we view these moments. Feeling stuck is not a sign of failure or a permanent sentence. It’s simply a strategic signal that something needs attention.

Think of it like a dashboard warning light in your car. When it flashes, you don’t assume the trip is over and abandon the vehicle on the side of the road. You pull over, pop the hood and investigate. That intentional pause is the place where your choices come alive.

How to break free from habitual thinking loops and overcome roadblocks

Before you can figure out how to get to where you want to go, you have to get completely honest about where you are right now. The art of introspection is both a skill and a strategy that allows us to do exactly that. It reveals those unique, critical perspectives that easily get overlooked in the rush of day-to-day decisions.

The next time you or your team hit that sticky, stagnant feeling, resist the urge to push harder or force a quick fix. Instead, take an intentional pause to break the pattern and ask yourself one foundational question: What’s present right now and what needs to be?

Look at the facts. Listen to the default language you’re using. Name the tension.

When you choose to examine that discomfort rather than automatically react to it, you uncover the blind spot holding you back. By seeing the situation more clearly, you can challenge your assumptions, act with greater intention and find the clarity and confidence to move forward toward your next step.

Key takeaways:

  • Feeling stuck is a strategic cue that a blind spot is masking the need for a pivot in your mindset.
  • Recognizing your limiting scripts is the first step to breaking an unconscious loop.
  • Asking what is present right now brings the intentional awareness required to find your next move.
